About

"Fools" is the fourth single off of Lou Emery's upcoming debut EP. Exposing her edgier side, this alternative rock tune is a fiery exposé of cynicism, propelled by driving electric guitars and powerful vocals. Its gutsy perspective on religion begs the question: Is ignorance truly bliss?

The initial four-on-the-floor drum beat starts the song off with a bang, psyching you out with an initial anti-chorus before finally exploding in the second chorus. The groove keeps you guessing, switching up throughout the track to mimic the back-and-forth between doubt and belief in the lyrics. Thematically, the song is a crisis of faith, describing the uncertainty of someone who's believed in a higher power their whole life, but doesn't know quite where they stand anymore. Particularly when religion is something they've relied on for a sense of comfort and companionship, it may just be easier to pretend than face the idea that there's nothing there at all.

"Fools" is a song that's captivating for both its raw storytelling and energetic rock production. It's relatable and yet stand-out, with catchy melodic layers and powerful vocals. The style can be compared to that of Paramore and Olivia Rodrigo, solidifying this rising artist as one to watch.

Lyrics

Verse:
Speak the words that I still will not confess
The truth that I never should express
That lately I do not believe

Where were you when the world became unkind?
When I was a child left behind?
Am I less hopeful or naive?

Chorus:
But does it even really matter
If in the end I still pretend
When the roof comes down around me
Know I may reach out again
And though you may be just a myth
Meant to help some fools with facing the unknown
Oh, I’d rather be a fool than be alone

Verse:
Tell me there is a place for us someday
Tell me you’ll take me far away
And I might trust you as before

But your messages never get across
How long can I wait for a response
I think my cries have gone ignored

Chorus:
But does it even really matter
If in the end I still pretend
When the roof comes down around me
Know I may reach out again
And though you may be just a myth
Meant to help some fools with facing the unknown
Oh, I’d rather be a fool than be alone

Bridge:
Ooh, you give me just enough concern
To make sure I will still return
Ooh, there’s just enough that you provide
I still cannot toss you aside

Chorus:
But does it even really matter
If in the end I still pretend
When the roof comes down around me
Well, know I may reach out again
And though you may be just a myth
Meant to help some fools with facing the unknown
Oh, I’d rather be a fool than be alone
Yeah, I’d rather be a fool than be
